Nick was born in 1960 and educated at Maidstone Grammar School; Roundhay School, Leeds; Thornes House School, Wakefield; and Durham University, where he studied law. Between 1984 and his election to Parliament in 1997 Nick was a chartered accountant with KPMG specialising in corporate taxation. Nick was first elected as the Member of Parliament for Bognor Regis and Littlehampton in 1997 and held the position of Frontbench Spokesman on Trade and Industry matters from June 1999 to September 2001, the previous year having been appointed Frontbench Spokesman on Treasury matters. From May 2005, he served as a Shadow Minister for Education and Shadow Minister for Schools. Between 2010 and 2012 Nick served as Minister of State for Schools. He rejoined the Department for Education in 2014 as the Minister of State for School Reform and returned as Minister of State for Schools in May 2015. Nick is passionate about raising academic standards in our schools and continues to press for improvements in children’s reading and arithmetic.
