Ray Kirtley

Coordinator of the Girls in to Global STEM Project,
University of Hull

Ray Kirtley has a background as a teacher of science and geography in secondary schools, as a local authority adviser and manager of a regional global education programme. He has co-ordinated 10 EU funded projects at the University of Hull. Apart from co-ordinating the ‘Girls into Global STEM project he is also working with Newton Fund projects in Vietnam and Thailand. In addition to his university role he also works as an external evaluator and chairs the Global Learning Association.This role involves managing contracts for the British Council and EU funded in-service teacher training courses.

  • Exploring the methodology behind the ‘Girls into Global STEM’ EU Erasmus + project which is focussed on motivating girls towards STEM subjects through engagement with global issues
  • Empowering older students to deliver ‘Global STEM Challenges’ to younger members of the school community
  • Utilising evidence-based research results devolving from these methodologies to develop a teacher training programme, a teacher toolkit and classroom resources focussed on engaging girls in STEM learning
  • Sharing these findings and results from the research strands of the project and assessing methodologies and teaching strategies which will improve outcomes for girls considering STEM subjects
